Carl Dutton, Owner

I’ve been running Mainspring since 1984, back when West Lake Hills was a quieter stretch of Hill Country and most folks still had manual doors they lifted by hand. I started this company because I couldn’t stand watching homeowners get talked into work they didn’t need by guys who’d vanish the minute the check cleared. I still answer the phone myself when the lines back up, and I still drive out to jobs when a customer asks for the owner. I hold a Texas contractor license and I’ve factory-trained on every brand we service, from the old Raynor torsion systems to the newest LiftMaster wall-mount openers. Off the clock, I’m usually messing with a 1978 Ford F-250 that has never once started on the first try in winter.

Marcus T., Lead Technician

Marcus has been with us fourteen years and he can diagnose a torsion spring failure by the sound a door makes when you try to lift it manually. He’s certified in high-tension spring work and he’s the one we send when a job’s gone sideways somewhere else - bent track, snapped cable, opener that’s been “fixed” three times by three different companies. He grew up in Oak Hill and he knows how the limestone substrate out here shifts in dry spells, throwing door alignment off faster than in other parts of Austin. Marcus carries a laminated photo in his wallet of the first door he ever installed solo, back in 2011. The homeowner still calls us for maintenance.

Elena R., Senior Installer

Elena came to us from a commercial door outfit downtown and she brought a rigor to residential work that raised everybody’s game. She’s our Clopay and Amarr specialist, and she’s particularly sharp on insulated door installs in the West Lake Hills hills where temperature swings can warp a cheap panel in two seasons. She holds OSHA 10 certification and she’s trained three of our apprentices in proper weather-sealing technique. Elena lives in Lost Creek and she’ll tell you her proudest install was a full custom carriage door on a 1960s ranch in Rollingwood where nothing was square and the header beam had settled an inch and a half. She finished it in one day. The homeowner cried.

Darnell K., Service Coordinator

Darnell answers the phones, dispatches the trucks, and keeps the parts inventory straight so Marcus and Elena aren’t making second trips. He’s been with us eight years and he’s the live voice you get when you call at 2 a.m. because your door’s stuck open and the neighbor’s cat keeps wandering into your garage. He grew up in East Austin and he knows every neighborhood we cover by its street grid and its typical door age - he can usually guess whether you’ve got a Genie screw drive from the 90s or a newer Chamberlain belt unit before you finish describing the problem. Darnell coaches youth basketball at a rec center in Sunset Valley and he applies the same patience to explaining a repair quote to a nervous homeowner.

Jesse P., Apprentice

Jesse joined us last spring after a stint in HVAC and he’s working through our journeyman track under Marcus’s direct supervision. He’s already certified in basic opener troubleshooting and he’s the fastest on the team at swapping out safety sensors, mostly because he spent his first month doing nothing but sensor alignments until he could do them blindfolded. Jesse lives in Barton Hills and he’s got a running bet with Elena that he’ll beat her one-day install record by the end of his second year. So far he’s at four hours on a standard steel door, and he’s not happy about it.

Every technician on this team, from Carl down to Jesse, works under the same 90-Day Done Right Promise we put in writing on every invoice. If something’s not right, we come back. The standing offers are the same across every visit: $50 off any repair over $250, a free second opinion on any written estimate you’ve gotten elsewhere, an $89 seasonal tune-up, and a permanent 5% discount for seniors and veterans. We don’t rotate gimmicks or inflate prices to make a “discount” look bigger. A square deal is a square deal.
